Your way to Lava-Dome
Opening hours
Tuesday to Sunday (including public holidays)
10:00 am to 5:30 pm
Last entrance at 4:45 pm every day
Also open on Mondays during the school holidays in the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia.
CLOSED from the 2nd Sunday in Advent (December 4th, 2022) to December 25th, from the end of the Christmas holidays to January 31st and during the carnival season on Heavy Thursday to Violet Tuesday.
From Cologne via the A61 take the Mendig/Maria Laach exit and merge onto the B262. Turn left towards Mendig. After approx. 50 m turn left toward Mendig/Lava-Dome/Lavakeller. After approx. 1 km you will see the Lava Dome below the brewery.
From Koblenz via the A61 take the Mendig/Maria Laach exit and turn left towards Mendig onto the B262. After approx. 300 m turn left toward Mendig/Lava-Dome/Lavakeller. After approx. 1 km you will see the Lava Dome below the brewery.
Coming from the A48, take the Mayen exit. After approx. 140 m you come to a roundabout. Leave the roundabout following signs towards Mayen on the B262. After approx. 3.5 km turn right towards Mendig. Follow the road for 8 km until you reach the Mendig exit (opposite McDonald’s). Turn right towards Mendig/Lava-Dome/Lavakeller. After approx. 1 km you will see the Lava Dome below the brewery.

Tours of the Lava Caverns
The Lava Cavern basalt mine can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours last max. 60 minutes.
Public tours for individual visitors take place on Tuesdays to Fridays at 1:30 pm. On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, “bridge” days between public holidays and weekends, and during the school holidays in the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia tours take place daily (including Mondays) at 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm.
Tip! We recommend wearing warm clothes and sturdy shoes for your visit to the Lava Caverns.
Disabled visitors
Both the Lava Dome and the Lava Caverns are suitable for people with disabilities and are equipped with lifts. Depending on the size and type of wheelchairs, there may be limitations within the Lava Caverns.
No dogs
We ask for your understanding that dogs of all sizes are not permitted to enter either the museum or the Lava Caverns. Guide dogs are the only exception to this rule.

Audio guides
For our foreign visitors we have a modern audio guide system available in the Lava Dome. The user-friendly, self-explanatory menu makes it very easy to discover our museum. Simply press a button to hear extensive explanations of the display panels and exhibits in either English, French or Dutch. We also provide this service for partially sighted German guests.
This service is free of charge. Please provide a security deposit (e.g., car key) to hire an audio guide.
